Anesthesia in ENT surgery

Head and neck surgery present several challenges to the anaesthetist. The presenting pathology may result in airway obstruction or make intubation difficult or impossible. It is very important to maintain a secure airway when access to the patient’s head may be limited and the need to be flexible about airway management during surgery, particularly in nose and throat procedures. Surgeons may obstruct or displace airway equipment. The potential for contamination of the airway needs to be noticed. Whenever an airway problem is identified intraoperatively, correcting it is the first priority, stopping surgery if necessary.
